Whatever you do, don’t buy this copy of the YUA movie. ADV acquired the masters to this and then sat on it for so long that they released a VHS-quality version on DVD: non-anamorphic; missing the 5.1 audio; and from the look of it made from a composite (TV) master.

Fortunately ADV are re-releasing it in February 2005 as it should have been the first time around. Get that version instead. Do not support this crappy release by buying it.

I was quite surprised at just how dark and gloomy You’re Under Arrest!: The Motion Picture is compared with the upbeat and funny situations of the OAV series and the Specials that I had seen from the series previously. While “purists” of the series will likely balk at the dark overtones (which are highly prevalent even in the scenes which take place in broad daylight), all the “negativity” and the terrorizing of Tokyo actually works quite well, with the series’ penchant for comedy coming through at just the right moments for brief levity.

Overall, the storyline is excellent. Mystery, drama, and action are all interwoven into a beautiful narrative which is absolutely enthralling. Yet while prior knowledge of the You’re Under Arrest! series would certainly be beneficial for the viewer, such familiarity with the series is definitely not needed… although the viewer may then wonder about why certain over-the-top feats take place in various scenes.

Where the film fails greatly, however, is in the occasional use of freeze-frames in key, high-action moments. Given that non-theatrical anime is typically produced under a very stringent time schedule and with a sub-par budget, cost-cutting tactics such as reusing scenes (such as the transformation scenes in any magical girl anime) or using freeze-frames to cut down on the number of animation cels (and the time to create them) is not surprising. But for a theatrical-release anime which inherently receives a higher budget and (at least in theory) more time for production to achieve the higher level of quality viewers expect in a theatrical release, the use of freeze-frames is this film’s major pitfall. The freeze-frame concept works well for comedy, such as A-ko jumping from missile to missing in Project A-ko; the freeze-frame concept to highlight a high-action/high-drama moment fails miserably, at least in this film.

The freeze-frame fiasco aside, You’re Under Arrest!: The Motion Picture is definitely not the stereotypical anime offering available in the States. Although this is really not meant for young children, they could probably enjoy this as well. While female characters are VERY prominent in the film, they are not super-endowed or fetishized or denigrated in any way. Nothing is gratuitous in this film, although some of the action is definitely over-the-top. And perhaps most importantly, the flow of the film is so natural and engrossing that it almost feels “real…” at least, until a freeze-frame occurs. Overall, this is a definite must-see film for any anime enthusiast, and a good place to start for those wishing to learn about anime.

Shot in black and white, this 1965 Japanese monster movie was the Daiei company’s answer to Toho’s famous Godzilla series. A skirmish between U.S. and unknown “enemy” planes results in an atomic explosion over the Arctic which unthaws and unleashes the giant flying turtle Gamera, who eventually settles into Japan to wreak havoc while seeking out hydro-electric sustenance. However, this fire-eating (and breathing) behemoth displays a compassionate streak when he saves the life of a young boy who nearly falls to his death from a toppled lighthouse. Panicky scientists and military officials vainly try to find ways to destroy Gamera while the boy seeks to bond with his misunderstood reptilian hero. Like many of its celluloid Japanese monster brethren, Giant Monster Gamera has not aged all that well, but the well-staged and photographed assault on Tokyo makes for festive mayhem. Overall the film is good entertainment for young kids as well as the inner children of the adults who grew up on these monster mashes. –Bryan Reesman

I first learned about Kekko Kamen befriend when it came out in ‘92 and searched everywhere for it but finally found it early this year. I expected it to be silly and wasn’t disappointed. The situation isn’t outstanding, but was never meant to be. In a school filled with girl-punishing teachers, one idiot stands above the rest. No matter what she does she ends up failing and beign tortured and needs to be rescued by the masked wonder Kekko Kamen.

The anime actually didn’t fetch too expressionless with the situations the girl got into so it was actually appealing from episode to episode. And, surprisingly enough, the english dubbed version of the anime wasn’t frightful. The dvd doesn’t have many, if any, special features worth talkign about but is really it’s only downside.

So, if you cherish barely concealed lesbian plotlines and nude women beating the crap out of people with nunchaku and her trim Commence Leg Jump, this anime is for you. If you’re looking for tiring, hentai, this isn’t for you. Otherwise fetch this anime and prepare to laugh your ass off.

That Go Nagai! His creations of anime characters such as “Cutey Honey”, “Devilman” and many other accepted titles have won many anime fans hearts but map help in 1991, “Kekko Kamen” was an anime that I never saw coming.

During those dilapidated school anime days, Go Nagai has been known as one of the broad human treasures of Japanese manga and of the anime industry.

Nagai has been credited for both novel awe comics/anime and the invention of the mecha genre but Nagai and perverted anime? It’s honest something that I couldn’t fathom. Could it be possible?

So, when rumors started swirling around that Go Nagai has an animation featuring a nude female superhero with a modern special go. I heard it was hentai but also unlike hentai that was out at the time (usually it was “Urotsukidoji” or “Cream Lemon” related) . No sex scenes but nudity and loads of perverted humor.

When “Kekko Kamen”finally came out in the U.S., I couldn’t wait to check it out!

The storyline of “Kekko Kamen” revolves around an moving school known as “Tremendous Toenail of Satan’s Spartan Instituteof Higher Education” ran by the perverted, masked distinguished and a lecherous teacher who enjoys punishing the students (and always wearing a surgical camouflage) .

The first OAV is about disciplining those who don’t do well in their tests and unfortunately for sleepy student Takahashi Mayumi, she accidentally is caught sleeping and she has to be punished.

Who to punish Mayumi is the powerful feared Nazi dominatrix.

As Mayumi is chained up and her clothes being whipped off her, who is to attach her but a masked, nude and well-endowed superhero named Kekko Kamen. Multi-talented with huge fighting skills and special moves such as “Muff-ication”, Kekko Kamen fights for justice, freedom and the naked truth.

And in the first OAV, Kekko Kamen uses S&M techniques to overpower the Nazi dominatrix to build Ms. Takahashi.

And in the next three episodes, Mayumi will continue to score kidnapped (and removed of her clothing) by the valuable and the teacher as they try to secure ways to occupy and defeat Kekko Kamen.

“Kekko Kamen” was definitely one of the few anime at the time to commence the perverted hentaish (without the sex) that we contemplate correct now but the anime was so over the top that the storyline and characters have not been duplicated.

OAV 2 features Kekko Kamen vs. a gym coach, OAV 3 features Kekko Kamen vs. an exchanged student armed with tentacles (what perverted anime can not have tentacles) and OAV 4 features Kekko Kamen vs. a perverted picture-taking samurai who impartial can’t halt taking prankish photos of the girls on campus.

It’s been well over a decade since I watched “Kekko Kamen” and watching it today, unruffled works.

I guess perverted humor hardly gets obsolete but I couldn’t befriend but laugh because this anime is so over-the-top and perverted.

Unfortunately there are only 4 OAV’s but for those who want more, you can also secure the novel manga published by Shueisha and also the “Kekko Kamen” live movies.

As for the animation, since this is worn school anime, don’t demand something well-kept.

The anime features the English and Japanese vocal track in 2.0 and for special features, modern character sketches are included.

There’s no design I can knock “Kekko Kamen” because it’s so consuming.

No matter how conventional the anime is, it calm doesn’t disappoint. I can’t portray how zany, fun and perverted this anime is but I definitely can recommend checking this DVD out.
